4.7. Freedom Scientific Pearl Camera
Last Updated: Dec 2019
Applies to: Kurzweil 1000 v14, Freedom Scientific Pearl Camera
Is Kurzweil 1000 compatible with the Freedom Scientific Pearl Camera?
Based off of current troubleshooting attempts, it seems that the Pearl Camera is disabled from working within Kurzweil 1000 (K1000). Even following the steps below does not result in a resolution, which was not always the case.
Please note that K1000 can technically even scan from a web cam, via the Preview > Acquire function. However, the Pearl camera is not categorized as a camera or scanner and shows up in Bluetooth and Other Devices within Windows.
Historical Info:
We’ve received reports from customers using K1000 v14 on Windows 10 that the current Freedom Scientific Pearl Camera (as of mid 2018) does work with Kurzweil 1000 v14.
Like most camera scanners, you must install all the necessary software and drivers for the camera first.
The drivers for the Pearl Camera can be found here: https://www.freedomscientific.com/Downloads/HardwareDrivers/DirectShowBridge, the camera driver for the knFB Reader and other third-party video apps.
You must also verify that the camera and paper are positioned properly, to avoid issues with angles and lighting.
Then, to scan with a camera through K1000, within K1000, you must verify that the driver is selected as the Scanner Source under your Scanning Settings.
After K1000 has initialized the driver as its source, you can perform a scan with it. The process to scan with cameras in K1000 is slightly different than traditional scanners. You must use the Preview function under the Scan menu. In the Preview window-dialogue, you would then Acquire to start a scan.
