1. Kurzweil 1000: Technical Information
1.1. Kurzweil Scanner Compatibility and Information
Last Updated: July 2016
Applies to Versions: See below
If you are using a Kurzweil 1000 or a Professional version of Kurzweil 3000, you can scan images directly into Kurzweil. For this, you will need to use a scanner that is compatible with your version of Kurzweil. To determine if your scanner is compatible, read below.
If you already have a working scanner and want to test its compatibility, the easiest way is to order a free Trial Edition of Kurzweil and install it.
Note:
If your scanner is not compatible with Kurzweil, you can always scan in images as .pdf or .tif files using your scanner's bundled software, and then open those images inside Kurzweil 1000 or a Professional version of Kurzweil 3000 for automatic conversion to a Kurzweil file type (.kes).
Kurzweil 3000 for Windows
Kurzweil 3000 for Windows (Professional Color or Black & White) is designed to work with scanners that use a TWAIN driver for your Windows operating system. For example, if Windows 10 64-bit is your operating system and you want to use a scanner that is compatible with Kurzweil 3000 , then you will need a scanner that uses a TWAIN driver made for Windows 10 64-bit.
The vast majority of scanners use TWAIN drivers, but to ensure compatibility with Kurzweil and your operating system you should always check with the manufacturer first. To ensure performance, we also recommend the use of standalone scanners and not printer-fax combination devices.
Kurzweil 1000
Kurzweil 1000 has identical compatibility requirements as Kurzweil 3000 for Windows.
Kurzweil 3000 for Macintosh
Kurzweil 3000 for Macintosh (Professional Color or Black & White) is designed to work with scanners that interface with Mac OS X's built-in Image Capture application using Image Capture drivers. Scanners that only use TWAIN drivers will not work with Kurzweil 3000 for Macintosh.
Scanners with Macintosh Image Capture drivers can be harder to find than those made with only TWAIN drivers. It is recommended that you verify with the manufacturer first if a prospective scanner uses Image Capture drivers. To ensure performance, we also recommend the use of standalone scanners and not printer-fax combination devices.
What are the advantages of scanning directly into Kurzweil?
If a user has difficulty using a computer, scanning with a separate program and then opening the image file into Kurzweil for conversion can be quite a difficult process. For such a user, it is helpful to give him or her the ability to scan pages from the scanner directly into Kurzweil as a .kes file by simply clicking a prominent button on the Kurzweil menu.
From a technical perspective, images scanned directly into Kurzweil may benefit from Kurzweil's scanning capabilities (deskew, auto-alignment, etc.). Some scanner software may not have Kurzweil's scanning capabilities.
In environments where individual users are not responsible for scanning their own materials, the logistical and administrative advantages of scanning directly into Kurzweil are not as significant. Scanning as a .pdf file first may provide a handy source file, as a .pdf scan of a book or document could potentially have many uses outside of Kurzweil.
Can the Kurzweil 3000 (LearnStation) perform scans?
No. The LearnStation version of Kurzweil 3000 cannot perform the following functions of the Professional versions:
- Scanning
- Image Conversion
- Virtual Printing
- Optical Character Recognition (OCR)
- Zone Editing
What's the different between Kurzweil 3000 Professional (Color) and Professional (Black & White)?
If you scan in, convert, or virtual print a colored image using Kurzweil 3000 Professional (Black & White), it will automatically grayscale the result within Kurzweil. Kurzweil 3000 Professional (Color) will not do this and retain image color.
There's a scanner I want to purchase but it does not meet compatibility requirements. Will it work with Kurzweil 3000?
If a scanner does not have a TWAIN series driver for Windows, you will not be able to scan directly into Kurzweil.
If a scanner does not have an Image Capture driver for Mac, you will not be able to scan directly into Kurzweil.
Can your company recommend a specific scanner model for use with Kurzweil 1000 or 3000?
We currently cannot provide scanner model recommendations. This may change in the future.
If I buy a scanner that meets the compatibility requirements is it guaranteed to work?
Even if a scanner is compatibile that does not 100% guarantee it will work, which is why we recommend testing out scanner compatibility first with a free trial of Kurzweil.
My scanner meets the compatibility requirements, but when scanning into Kurzweil it malfunctions. What can I do?
- Your scanner will not work inside of Kurzweil if it's not properly installed or functioning with your computer's operating system. Verify that the scanner works in Windows by using your Fax and Scan Scanner Wizard. If you're using a Macintosh, verify that you can scan using your Macintosh's built-in Image Capture application. Also test your scanner with any bundled scanning software from the manufacturer. If your scanner is malfunctioning outside of Kurzweil, please contact your scanner manufacturer for technical support.
- If possible, download and install the latest drivers for your scanner. Updating or reinstalling your scanner drivers will often fix scanning problems.
- If your scanner is only malfunctioning within Kurzweil, please contact our technical support department. We may be able to modify settings for its TWAIN driver, improving how it interfaces with Kurzweil. Although this troubleshooting process usually results in success, it is not 100% guaranteed to work.
1.2. Guide: MSI Deployment and Remote Installation - K1000 v14, v13, and v12
Last Updated: July 2016
Applies to Versions: Kurzweil 1000 v12, v13, v14
This article is written for system or network administrators attempting to create an enterprise-level silent installation/deployment of Kurzweil 3000. Desktop technicians, teachers, or home users should conduct manual installations of the software.
Note: Once Kurzweil 1000 is deployed, it will first function in Trial Mode for 30-days or until it is activated. To activate, a user must run Kurzweil 1000 as an Administrator and complete an in-software registration chute requiring a serial number. This serial number is located on/within the packaging of the software.
Kurzweil 1000 v14
Preparation
Uninstall any older version of K1000 existing on your computers
Due to architecture changes in the K1000 v14 software, you cannot install K1000 v14 over previous versions (such as K1000 v13.x, v12.x, etc.). So if you have K1000 v13 installed on a computer, you must first uninstall K1000 v13 before installing K1000 v14.
All of K1000's MSI installers can also work as uninstallers if you pass the msiexec uninstall command switch (/u) to the MSI. For example, if you have K1000 v13 installed on your computers, you're looking at the following steps before you attempt to install K3000 v14:
1. Locate the K1000 v13 installer files on your distribution point (network share drive).
2. If you no longer have the K1000 v13 installer files, you would need to get them from the K1000 DVD of the appropriate version.
3. The command-line to silently uninstall K1000 v13 would be: msiexec /u "\\SERVERNAME\K1000InstallPackage\Software\Kurzweil 1000 v.13.msi" /qn /norestart
4. Deploy the uninstall job, ensuring that the older version of K1000 is uninstalled on the computer grouping.
5. Get ready to prepare your K1000 v14 silent install following the instructions below.
Kurzweil 1000 v14 requires .NET Framework v4.5.1 and Microsoft Visual C++ 2013 (x86) and (x64) packages
A regular full UI install of K1000 (i.e. double-clicking the installer to run it) will automatically install the following Visual C++ and .NET packages if they're not already installed on the computer. Components from these packages are required to install K1000 properly. However, when the K1000 installer is run silently (e.g. a msiexec deployment made with a /qn switch) it cannot attempt to install these redistributables along with it. This means (if they're not already installed) you need to install the following redistributables prior to launching K1000:
- Microsoft .NET 4.5.1
- Microsoft Visual C++ 2013 Redistributable Package x86 (this is required on both x86 and x64 versions of Windows; yes, this will install on a x64 computer)
- Microsoft Visual C++ 2013 Redistributable Package x64 (this is only required on x64 versions of Windows)
.NET 4.5.1 download: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=40779
Command-line silent install for .NET:
<filename>.exe /q /norestart
C++ 2013 download: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=40784
Command-line silent install for C++ 2013:
<path>\vcredist_x86.exe /install /quiet /norestart
<path>\vcredist_x64.exe /install /quiet /norestart
Warning: There's a third version of the 2013 Visual C++ redistibutable, the arm version which is made for Windows 8 tablets, and may be downloaded as part of an automatic update from the Windows Store. The arm version is not compatible with K1000. If this package is installed, make sure to uninstall it from the computer first.
Readying the Kurzweil 1000 v14 Content Package for Installation
1. Copy the contents of your Kurzweil 1000 v14 DVD to a shared distribution point (i.e. a shared folder on your network, most likely hosted on a server in your data center). All user groups will need at least read and execute permissions to this shared folder.
Command-line Silent Installation
It's important that the Kurzweil 1000 v.14.msi be run from the shared folder you created in an earlier step (that most likely exists on your distribution point), as it calls various resource files from its location during installation. So keep the files and folders that "live with" the .msi in their relative location. If the.msi is taken out of its location and run by itself it will not function.
Instructions
Execute a Windows Installer (msiexec) installation via a command-line window (cmd.exe) or .bat script following the parameters and examples listed below. You'll need to deploy the Kurzweil 1000 v.14.msi.
If you want to perform a manual local test, because you're executing a silent (/qn) installation, you will not see a UI during installation. To monitor installation, you can observe the msiexec.exe process in Task Manager. The installation should be considered complete when:
a) All instances of the msiexec.exe process are no longer taking any CPU resources.
b) There is a Kurzweil 1000 shortcut created on the desktop.
c) There is an entry for Kurzweil 1000 in Windows' installed programs.
Warning: If you want to perform a manual local test using Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8 with User Account Control (UAC) enabled, make sure to Run as Administrator cmd.exe or the .bat file you execute.
Kurzweil 1000 v14:
1. Ensure that you have properly deployed the prerequisite Microsoft .NET Framework and Visual C++ 2013 (x86) and (x64) packages.
2. Deploy the Kurzweil 1000 v.14.msi using a command-line similar to:
msiexec /i "\\SERVERNAME\K1000v14DVDShare\Kurzweil 1000 v.14.msi" AUTO="1" /qn /norestart
Kurzweil 1000 v13 and v12
Preparation
Readying the Kurzweil 1000 v13/v12 Content Package for Installation
1. Copy the contents of your Kurzweil 1000 DVD to a shared distribution point (i.e. a shared folder on your network, most likely hosted on a server in your data center). All user groups will need at least read and execute permissions to this shared folder.
2. Download the contents of the K1000UIAction folder here: ftp://ftp.kurzweiledu.com/pub/K1000UIAction/ . All three of these files (Data1.cab, K1000UIAction.msi, SPCHAPI.EXE) should be located within a separate shared distribution point (i.e. a shared folder on your network, most likely hosted on a server in your data center). All user groups will need at least read and execute permissions to this shared folder.
Command-line Silent Installation
It's important that the Kurzweil 1000 v.12.msi or Kurzweil 1000 v.13.msi be run from the shared folder you created in an earlier step (that most likely exists on your distribution point), as it calls various resource files from its location during installation.
You'll need to deploy the Kurzweil 1000 v.12.msi or Kurzweil 1000 v.13.msi followed by the K1000UIAction.msi.
Warning: If you want to perform a manual local test using Windows Vista, Windows 7 or Windows 8 with User Account Control (UAC) enabled, make sure to Run as Administrator cmd.exe or the .bat file you execute.
Kurzweil 1000 v13:
1. Deploy the Kurzweil 1000 v.13.msi using a command-line similar to:
msiexec /i "\\SERVERNAME\K1000v13DVDShare\Kurzweil 1000 v.13.msi" AUTO="1" /qn /norestart
2. Once the Kurzweil 1000 v.13.msi installation is complete, deploy the K1000UIAction.msi using a command-line similar to:
msiexec /i "\\SERVERNAME\K1000UIAction\K1000UIAction.msi" AUTO="1" /qn /norestart
Kurzweil 1000 v12:
1. Deploy the Kurzweil 1000 v.12.msi using a command-line similar to:
msiexec /i "\\SERVERNAME\K1000v12DVDShare\Kurzweil 1000 v.12.msi" AUTO="1" /qn /norestart
2. Once the Kurzweil 1000 v.12.msi installation is complete, deploy the K1000UIAction.msi using a command-line similar to:
msiexec /i "\\SERVERNAME\K1000UIAction\K1000UIAction.msi" AUTO="1" /qn /norestart
1.3. Installing both Kurzweil 1000 and Kurzweil 3000 on the same machine
Last Updated: June 2015
Issue:
User is attempting to have both Kurzweil 1000 and Kurzweil 3000 installed on the same machine.
Solution:
When installing both Kurzweil 1000 and Kurzweil 3000 on the same machine, it is important that they get installed in the correct order. The correct installation order is the older version of the two products first (by release date) followed by the newer version of the two products (by release date).
Example:
For a user that has Kurzweil 1000 v13 and Kurzweil 3000 v13, install Kurzweil 1000 v13 first (as it was released prior to Kurzweil 3000 v13) and then install Kurzweil 3000 v13.
Notes:
- Patch versions do not make a difference in the installation order. Only the base version and its release date.
- With both Kurzweil 1000 v14 and Kurzweil 3000 v14 on the same machine, this is no longer a requirement.

2. Kurzweil 1000: Troubleshooting
2.1. Unable to Complete Activation
Applies to Versions: Kurzweil 1000
Issue Summary #1:
When attempting to complete the Activation/Registration steps, the user is prompted that they must have Administrative Privileges to continue.
Troubleshooting Steps:
- Kurzweil 1000 requires that a user have Administrative Privileges on a local machine when activating the product. This means that the user account should be classified as an "Administrator" in the operating system.
- If you use Windows Vista/7/8/10, a security feature called User Account Control (UAC) may prevent Kurzweil from activating even when logged in as the Administrator. This means that before you can activate, you must either turn off UAC in Windows or right-click (Shift+F10) the Kurzweil 1000 shortcut on the desktop and select Run as Administrator.
Issue Summary #2:
When attempting to complete the Activation/Registration steps, the "Confirm Password" box is grayed out and does not allow any text to be entered.
Troubleshooting Steps:
This issue has been addressed in recent patches. Please patch up to the latest release for your version of Kurzweil 1000.
For information regarding updating / patching your Kurzweil 1000, please see our "Guide to updating / patching Kurzweil 1000" (http://helpspot.sopriswest.com/index.php?pg=kb.page&id=1416)
2.2. Error: VW voices say "Your license has expired" with ZoomText installed
Applies to Versions: Kurzweil 1000, Kurzweil 3000, ZoomText
Issue Summary:
If ZoomText and Kurzweil 1000 or Kurzweil 3000 are installed on the same computer, when attempting to read with the VW Paul, VW Kate or VW Julie voice it may say "Your license has expired" or "You do not have a valid license verification file. This version is strictly for demonstration purposes only."
This occurs because ZoomText has installed a different licensed versions of the NeoSpeech synthesizer.
Explanation:
If ZoomText is installed first with NeoSpeech, it works fine. If K1000/K3000 is then installed with NeoSpeech, the voices work fine until you launch ZoomText. ZoomText would generate a license file in Kurzweil's NeoSpeech folder, overwriting Kurzweil's, which makes the voices "demo." Each time you launch ZoomText, it generates and overwrites the license file in Kurzweil's folder.
If you install K1000/K3000 over ZoomText but choose a custom install so that NeoSpeech voices are excluded, the voices work fine in both products.
If K1000/K3000 is installed first with NeoSpeech, ZoomText would detect that a version of NeoSpeech is already on the system and disable the install option for NeoSpeech and ZoomText still would generate and overwrite the license file in our NeoSpeech folder. Consequently, the voices stop working in both products once ZoomText is launched.
Update (June 2015):
Newer builds of K1000/K3000 v13 and v14 mark our NeoSpeech license as read-only, so ZoomText won't overwrite Kurzweil's license.
Troubleshoot Steps (K1000/K3000 v13/v14):
First Method:
This method only applies to K3000 v13.
1. Uninstall both K1000 or K3000 and ZoomText. This can be done through your Windows Control panel: Add / Remove Programs (Windows XP) or Programs and Features (Windows Vista and up).
2. If you're using K3000, download the latest build of K3000 v13/K3000 v14, available here: http://www.kurzweiledu.com/k3win. Install K3000 v13/v14 from the download.
3. After installing K3000, register it.
4. Install ZoomText.
5. The VW voices should now work.
Second Method:
This method only applies to K1000 v13/v14.
1. Uninstall both K1000 or K3000 and ZoomText. This can be done through your Windows Control panel: Add / Remove Programs (Windows XP) or Programs and Features (Windows Vista and up).
2. After installing K1000, register it.
3. Download and install the latest update for K1000. You can download the latest update here: http://www.kurzweiledu.com/ki-1000-version13-updates.html
4. Install ZoomText.
5. The VW voices should now work.
Troubleshoot Steps (older verisons of K1000/K3000):
These methods apply to older versions of K1000/K3000.
The below solution is quoted and provided from ZoomText's KB: http://www.aisquared.com/knowledge_base/more/zoomtext_with_kurzweil_expired_license_and_or_license_verification_error
There are a couple of ways to resolve this issue.
First method:
- Uninstall ZoomText.
- Reinstall ZoomText, and select the Custom installation.
- In the section for installing the speech synthesizers, uncheck the checkbox to install the NeoSpeech synthesizers and click the Next button. (This way ZoomText should be able to use the NeoSpeech synthesizers from Kurzweil.)
- Follow the rest of the onscreen instructions and reboot the PC when prompted.
- Start ZoomText.
Second method (it is best to do this method with ZoomText off if possible):
- Insert your ZoomText CD or ZoomText USB and forgo the auto play or cancel out of the ZoomText installation process.
- Go into My Computer in XP or Computer in Vista and Windows 7.
- Find the drive that has the ZoomText CD or ZoomText USB in it.
- Right click on the drive and left click on Open in the pop up menu list.
- Double click on the ZtSetup or Setup folder.
- Double click on the Support folder.
- Double click on the Kate64M folder.
- Double click on Setup.exe (the type would be Application).
- Follow the installation wizard. It may prompt you to uninstall NeoSpeech Synthesizer Kate. Continue the uninstall process by taking the default settings.
- Once complete, browse back by pressing on the Back button in the upper left hand corner of the window.
- You will be back in the Support folder and you will want to Double click on the Paul64M folder.

2.5. Error 1920 during installation
Last Updated: June 2014
Issue:
During installation the user will receive an error 1920 regarding a licensing issue with Nuance.
Solution:
This issue is generally caused by a missing/corrupt Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0. To install Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0 please follow the steps below.
1. Launch Windows Update through Control Panel > Windows Update
2. Ensure that all Important Updates are installed
3. Ensure that all Optional .NET Framework updates are installed

2.6. Error 1935 during installation
Last Updated: June 2016
Issue:
During installation the user will receive an Error 1935 regarding a licensing issue with Nuance.
Solution #1:
Stop the Windows Installer service within Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services.
1. Navigate to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services
2. Find "Windows Installer" and open it
3. Under the General Tab choose "Stop" to stop the service
4. Under the General Tab ensure that the Startup Type is set to "Manual"
Solution #2:
If you are running a Group Policy environment, there is a rule that can interfere with the proper launching of the Nuance Licensing Service required for the installation.
The rule in question is "System Cryptography: Use FIPS compliant Algorithms for encryption, hashing, and signing." This policy needs to be disabled in order for the installation to complete successfully.
If you are still experiencing the error after performing these steps, please see the Knowledge Book Entry for Error 1920 during installation.
2.7. Converts to demo mode after upgrading to Windows 8.1/Windows 10
Issue:
After upgrading the Operating System to Windows 8.1 or Windows 10, the Kurzweil 1000 installation converts to a Trial version and is unable to be registered.
Solution:
If you are reading this before performing the update to Windows 8.1/10, this issue should be prevented by updating your Kurzweil 1000 v13 or v14 to the latest patch (see the links below). In order for Kurzweil 1000 to be compatible with Windows 8.1/10, Kurzweil 1000 v13.04 or 14.03 and higher must be installed.
If you already have Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 and are experiencing this issue, please follow the below steps to resolve:
1. Uninstall Kurzweil 1000

2.8. Error when opening a PDF file using KOCRUtil
Issue:
When attempting to open a PDF document using the KOCRUtil utility in Kurzweil 1000 v13.01, the user will receive a prompt stating that the demo has expired.
Solution:
This issue is addressed in the latest patch for Kurzweil 1000 v13. The patch can be found through the Kurzweil 1000 Online > Updates menu, or by manually downloading it here: https://www.kurzweiledu.com/downloads/K1000patch13.04.exe
2.9. No Page Orientation message
Applies to versions: K1000 v13, v14
Issue Summary:
Normally, after a page is scanned in and it goes through recognition (and meets the confidence threshold yet, indicating the page is "good enough"), K1000 will say how the page is oriented on the scanner bed.
Under the Verbosity settings, this message can be found (and modified) through Scanning and Recognition > Event Page Orientation Info > Message
However, despite this setting, occasionally this function will not speak.
Notes:
This issue is a result of a bug that was introduced in K1000 v13 and up. This issue is currently under investigation by our developers. Currently there is no ETA for a bug fix. However, a solution does exist:
Solution:
You can learn about the orientation of the page last scanned using the Reading Status function. That can be done through the menus with Help > Reading Status. It is also available with the Kurzweil 1000 keypad by pressing and holding the Help and Status key, which is the Enter key on the numeric keypad.
2.10. Error: K1000 crashes during recognition/orientation; ABBYY issue
Last updated: January 2018
Problem:
In some environments with additional GPO security policies in place, K1000 may unexpectedly quit during the orientation or OCR process after a scanning.
This issue mostly occurs on Windows 10 computers.
Solution:
Make sure that the applicable user or user group has Full Control of the %programdata%\ABBYY folder. If you’re unsure of what user group is applicable, you can add the universal Everyone user group.
If that doesn’t work, try giving users Full Control of additional folders and registry keys:
HKLM\Software\Wow6432Node\KESI
HKCU\Software\KESI
C:\Program Files (x86)\Kurzweil Educational Systems
Alternate solution:
Set Kurzweil 1000 to run as administrator, this may elevate privileges and get around this issue. If this works, it's recommended to set Kurzweil 1000 to run as admin from the shortcut properties.
2.11. How to add exceptions for Norton 360

1. Open Norton 360
2. Select the dropdown option on the OPEN button to the right of Device Security
3. Select Performance
4. Select Settings from here at the top right
5. Select Antivirus
6. Select the Scans and Risks Tab
7. Using the configure option add exclusions for "Real Time Exclusions" and "Scan Exclusions" for these folders:
C:\ProgramData\ABBYY
C:\Program Files (x86)\Kurzweil Educational Systems
8. Remove Kurzweil 1000
9. Reboot the computer
10. Reinstall Kurzweil 1000
Note: See the captures attached for examples of some of the Norton 360 settings screens.
2.12. Error: 1402 Could not open key, during install
Last updated: June 2017
Problem:
During installation of K1000 (we have encountered this in K1000 v14), a user may encounter Error 1402, noting a registry key that the user does not have sufficient access to. Clicking OK will roll back the installation.
Why is this happening?
On the computer, there are subkeys of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData\S-1-5-18\Components that do not have an owner. When a key doesn't have an owner it cannot be accessed by our installer.
Most computers aren't affected by this issue. It is unclear what is causing it, but it may be related to unique computer images used by certain manufacturers (e.g. DELL) or a result of a Windows update (e.g. updating Windows 7 to Windows 10).
It's possible to add an owner to each key individually using the Windows GUI. However, using the Windows GUI you cannot apply ownership from a parent key to a child object/key if that object/key does not have an owner itself.
There's two solutions here:
- You'll have to run the installer, get the error, and then drill down into the registry key noted in that error to find the key. Give that key an owner. Repeat the process again, probably more than a dozen times. This could take hours.
- You can use SetACL.exe to add owners to keys in a recursive fashion.
Solution:
1. Copy the applicable (32 or 64 bit) version of SetACL.exe to C:\
2. Open a Windows Command Prompt with elevated permissions, via right-click > Run as Administrator cmd.exe
3. In the Command Prompt window, copy and then paste the following command lines:
C:\SetACL.exe -on "hklm\software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData\S-1-5-18\Components" -ot reg -actn setowner -ownr n:S-1-5-32-544 -rec yes -log "C:\SetACLownerlog.txt"
C:\SetACL.exe -on "hklm\software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData\S-1-5-18\Components" -ot reg -actn ace -ace "n: S-1-5-32-544;p:full" -rec yes -log "C:\SetACLpermissionlog.txt"
Doing this should resolve your 1402 errors.
Troubleshooting:
If you encounter further errors during the installation that are not 1402 errors, here are some troubleshooting solutions that may resolve the issue:
1. Make exceptions for Kurzweil 1000.exe, temporarily disable, and/or uninstall third-party anti virus software. EST anti virus software has been known to prevent K1000 from installing.
2. Make sure Windows is up to date, and has the latest version of .NET and the applicable C++ dependencies.
3. Regarding 1722 errors, see here: http://support.cambiumtech.com/index.php?pg=kb.page&id=1771
2.13. Nothing happens when you run K1000; does not open
Last Updated: Feb 2019
Applies to supported versions of Kurzweil 1000
Problem:
You attempt to run or open Kurzweil 1000 and nothing happens. An entry in the Windows Task Manager may not even appear momentarily.
This problem may occur if Windows 10 Defender Antivirus is enabled with Controlled folder access, and Controlled folder access somehow incorrectly flagged Kurzweil 1000 or components of Kurzweil 1000 as unsafe.
Solution:
Disable Windows Defender and/or disable Controlled folder access, and/or add Kurzweil 1000.exe and the C:\Program Files (x86)\Kurzweil Educational Systems folder as Exclusions to scan, active protection and controlled folder access components of Windows Defender.
More information can be found here: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/security/threat-protection/windows-defender-exploit-guard/enable-controlled-folders-exploit-guard
2.14. Missing System Code
Problem:
System Code is missing on the Phone registration screen for K1000.
Troubleshooting:
1. Check System Date/Time and make sure it's correct.
2. Try using "Run as Admin"
3. Check to see if %Public% has a Documents folder, if it does not add this folder.
K1000 writes an install date in C:\Users\Public\Documents\KESI\K1000 directory. This directory will contain a file named 'install' which contains a date/time. If the above directory is missing, it cannot write there.
If after verifying/checking all of the above and you still do not have a system code:
Uninstall K1000 along with the registry entries and try installing again after steps 1-3.
3. Kurzweil 1000: How Do I?
3.1. Guide to updating / patching Kurzweil 1000
How do you update or patch Kurzweil 1000 v14.12 or newer?

3.4. Saving as a PDF document
Issue:
How do I save a Kurzweil 1000 document as a PDF document?
Solution:
Kurzweil 1000 does not natively support saving directly to a PDF format. However, there are some alternative options available for saving as an OCR'ed (Optical Character Recognition) PDF document.
Option #1: Save using Microsoft Office through Kurzweil 1000
As Kurzweil 1000 makes use of Microsoft Office for its import/export PDF handling, you can use Microsoft Office for saving as a PDF. If you have Microsoft Office installed, follow these steps.
1. Launch Kurzweil 1000
2. Scan/Open the document you wish to save as a PDF
3. Go to File > Save As
4. For the current format, choose Other
5. Choose OK
6. Kurzweil 1000 will search for applicable file conversion capabilities on the machine. If Microsoft Office is detected a list of available formats will appear that lists PDF.
7. Choose PDF from this list
8. Choose OK
9. Give the document a name and select a destination directory
Option #2: Use the KOCRUtil.exe Utility
This utility is included with Kurzweil 1000 v13/v14, and it allows for the recognition and immediate saving of documents to specific formats. One of the supported formats is PDF.
1. Browse into C:\Program Files (x86)\Kurzweil Educational Systems\KOCRUtil
2. Launch KOCRUtil.exe (Note: this application does not have native speech so a screen reader is recommended)
3. Fill in the following fields:
- Image Files - This should be the electronic image file that you wish to recognize
- Output File - This should be the name/destination of the file you are creating
- Format - This should be the format that you want to save the recognized file as (ie: PDF)
- Recognition Engine - This is the OCR Engine that will be used for the recognition process (try switching between the two if recognition is unsatisfactory)
- Recognition Languages - Select the language of the document
4. Choose Start Recognition and allow the process to complete
3.5. Accepting the License Agreement
Issue:
After the initial launch of Kurzweil 1000 a License Agreement is displayed. How do I accept it?
Solution:
After reviewing the License Agreement, it can be accepted by pushing the "Return" key or the "-" key on the keypad.
The License Agreement only needs to be accepted once per installation.

- Launch Kurzweil 1000
- Go to Settings > Scanning (Alt T, S)
- Set the Threshold to Color
- Set the Scanner Source to your camera device (ie: either Hovercam or Sceye)
- Choose OK (Enter)
- Go to Settings > Save Settings (Alt T, V)
- Save over the default or create a new settings file (if a new settings file is created, it will need to be loaded upon each launch of Kurzweil 1000)
4.2. Brother Scanner scans repeatedly
Last Updated: June 2014
Issue:
When attempting a scan within Kurzweil 1000 using a Brother scanner, the scanner scans repeatedly.

We cannot guarantee functionality with different versions of Windows 11 and functionality of this scanner may change in the future.
4.7. Freedom Scientific Pearl Camera
Last Updated: Dec 2019
Applies to: Kurzweil 1000 v14, Freedom Scientific Pearl Camera
Is Kurzweil 1000 compatible with the Freedom Scientific Pearl Camera?
Based off of current troubleshooting attempts, it seems that the Pearl Camera is disabled from working within Kurzweil 1000 (K1000). Even following the steps below does not result in a resolution, which was not always the case.
Please note that K1000 can technically even scan from a web cam, via the Preview > Acquire function. However, the Pearl camera is not categorized as a camera or scanner and shows up in Bluetooth and Other Devices within Windows.
Historical Info:
We’ve received reports from customers using K1000 v14 on Windows 10 that the current Freedom Scientific Pearl Camera (as of mid 2018) does work with Kurzweil 1000 v14.
Like most camera scanners, you must install all the necessary software and drivers for the camera first.
The drivers for the Pearl Camera can be found here: https://www.freedomscientific.com/Downloads/HardwareDrivers/DirectShowBridge, the camera driver for the knFB Reader and other third-party video apps.
You must also verify that the camera and paper are positioned properly, to avoid issues with angles and lighting.
Then, to scan with a camera through K1000, within K1000, you must verify that the driver is selected as the Scanner Source under your Scanning Settings.
After K1000 has initialized the driver as its source, you can perform a scan with it. The process to scan with cameras in K1000 is slightly different than traditional scanners. You must use the Preview function under the Scan menu. In the Preview window-dialogue, you would then Acquire to start a scan.
4.8. HP Scanjet 2700
Last Updated: March 2021
Problem:
The HP scanjet 2700 may not scan properly depending on the driver selectected as a source.
Solution:
Choose the HP ScanJet 2700 series (USB) driver with default settings within Settings > Scanning.
This was tested to work on Windows 10 with Kurzweil 1000.
4.9. Epson DS 1630
Last Updated: Jan 2023
Applies to: Using the Epson DS 1630 with Kurzweil 1000, may apply to Kurzweil 3000
Problem:
The Epson DS 1630 may not scan properly with Kurzweil. This issue was encountered with using Kurzweil 1000 v14, combined with Windows 10.
Solution:
Use ScanConf.exe to modify the settings of the driver, then initialize it within Kurzweil.
Only the WIA + TWAIN driver worked. The mutually exclusive TWAIN or WIA drivers both caused a crash when selected under Scanner Setup > Select Scanner during scanner initialization.
Based on testing, either ADF could be configured to work, or Flatbed. Could not find a configuration to get both to work together.
For ADF:
Most of the settings at default, Hold Scanner = Never, Simulate Xfer Ready = Always On, Force ADF Ready = On
These settings would allow the ADF to work, but Flatbed scanning would repeatedly scan.
For Flatbed:
Force Scanner Ready = On, Initialize ADF = Initially Disable ADF, Force ADF Ready = Off, Require ADF Ready = Off, Hold Scanner = Never, Simulate Xfer Ready = Always On
See attached screenshot for Scanner Configuration settings of the flatbed.
4.10. Epson WF 3820
Last Updated: Jan 2023
Applies to: Using the Epson WF 3820 with Kurzweil 1000, may apply to Kurzweil 3000
Problem:
The Epson WF 3820 may not scan properly with Kurzweil. This issue was encountered with using Kurzweil 1000 v14, combined with Windows 10.
Solution:
Based off of troubleshooting, we could not find a setting within ScanConf.exe to enable either the TWAIN, WIA, or TWAIN + WIA driver of the Epson WF 3820 to work in Kurzweil 1000.
As of now, we should consider this scanner to be problematic for use with K1000 and not compatible.
4.11. Epson XP-4200 series
Last Updated: July 2024
Applies to: Kurzweil 1000 v14, Windows 10 and the Epson XP-4200 series scanner
Info:
This scanner appears to function properly with Kurzweil 1000 v14 on Windows 10, selecting the TWAIN driver for it within Kurzweil 1000 under Settings > Scanning > Scanner Source.
This is not an officially supported scanner, but based on testing it appears to work.
4.12. HP Envy 7640
Last Updated: July 2023
Applies to: Kurzweil 1000, HP Envy 7640
Problem:
The HP Envy 7640 may not scan properly with Kurzweil 1000 (K1000) combined with Windows 11.
Reason:
There are no known configuration settings at this time to get the HP Envy 7640 to function properly with Kurzweil 1000.
If you have this scanner, we recommend scanning with the bundled HP scanning software as a PDF, then open the PDF in K1000.
At this time, we do not consider the HP Envy 7640 a supported scanner.
4.13. Canon TS 9100 Network series
Last Updated: May 2023

Solution:
In Kurzweil 1000, go to Settings > Scanning. Within your Scanning settings, select the below settings:
Scanner Source: select the CanoScan LiDE 300 (WIA) driver
Document Feeder: Disabled
Hold Scanner: Always
Refer to the attached picture for more details.
4.15. Canon MF455dw
Last Updated: Oct 2024
This applies to the combination of using a Canon MF455dw scanner, Windows 11 and Kurzweil 1000 v14.18 together.
Problem:
The scanner will not scan properly with the detected Windows MF450 series drivers.
Solution:
1. You will need to download and install the full driver package from Canon's website here: https://www.usa.canon.com/support/p/imageclass-mf455dw#idReference%3Dsoftware-drivers
2. Ensure that the scanner works by itself using the included Canon software, scanning in that first. Close the scanning app after testing.
3. Then launch Kurzweil 1000, and go to Settings > Scanning in the menu:
Set the following:
- Scanner Source: choose the first instance of the Canon MF450 Series (TWAIN) listed, you may have to up arrow to select it
- Document Feeder Disabled, Duplex Scanning Disabled, Hold Scanner to Never
Click Apply and then OK
4. Then go to Settings > Save Settings as Default
Attempt a Scan using the flatbed and it should work.
4.16. OpticBook A300 vs A300 Plus vs A300M with K1000
Last Updated: May 2024
Applies to: Kurzweil 1000 v14, Windows 10 and the OpticBook A300 scanner
Problem:
A user has a device that looks like an OpticBook A300 Plus: https://plustek.com/us/products/book-scanners/opticbook-a300-plus/
The drivers for the A300 Plus are installed, but the scanner isn’t working -- not within K1000 or Windows.
Reason:
Is the scanner several years old?
If that's the case, it's most likely not the newer A300 Plus model and instead the older A300 (non-Plus) model.
Solution:
- Uninstall the OpticBook A300 Plus drivers and related software.
- Go here and search for the older A300 (non-Plus) drivers to download: https://plustek.com/us/support/drivers-and-downloads.php
- In the field "Please enter product model" on the above website, enter 'A300' and search. That will bring you to a download page to download those drivers.
- Install the regular A300 drivers.
- Also verify the scanner's lock switch (underneath the scanner) is set to unlocked.
- Restart the computer and make sure to select the A300 Twain driver as the Scanner Source within K1000's Scanner Settings.
K1000 v14 has been tested to work with the A300 on Windows 10, using the A300 drivers.
