1.61. Error: can't be opened because Apple cannot check it for malicious software
Last Updated: Oct 2019
Applies to: Kurzweil 3000 for Macintosh, Version 16.0.16 and earlier
Problem:
If you try to run or install Kurzweil 3000 (K3000) Version 16.0.16 or earlier on a Mac OS 10.15 computer, you may receive an error "can't be opened because Apple cannot check it for malicious software."
This issue should mostly be resolved in K3000 Version 16.0.17 and later, however earlier versions of K3000 will still be affected.
Reason:
The warning is due to the enhanced Security on Mac OS’s Gatekeeper utility. With Catalina, it’s no longer enough to sign your code with the Developer ID, you also need to Notarize it.
If you're using K3000 Version 15 or earlier, it's simply not supported on Mac OS 10.15 and greater. This is because K3000 Version 15 and earlier is a 32-bit application and Mac OS 10.15 has disabled 32-bit applications from running, along with support.
If you're using K3000 Version 16 or later, make sure to download the latest version from here: www.kurzweiledu.com/k3mac
K3000 Version 16 is a native 64-bit app and is officially supported on Mac OS 10.15. If you're still having problems with K3000 Version 16 see below.
Troubleshooting:
Workaround in the event of any K3000 Version 16 users still seeing this or do not have internet access to reach out to Apple's Gatekeeper, is to do the following:
1. Double Click on our installer.
2. Will show an error message.
3. Open Settings on the Desktop, Open Security & Privacy Tab.
4. Click "Open Anyway"
