1.37. Error: 1402

Issue:

During installation of Kurzweil 1000/3000, you receive the error "Error 1402.  Could not open key...".  This issue pertains to an issue with the permissions within the registry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData\S-1-5-18\Components key.

Alternate Solution:

Caution:  This solution requires modification of the computer's registry which, if performed incorrectly, can result in an unbootable machine.  If you are uncomfortable performing these steps, please contact our Technical Support Department for further assistance.

1. Login to the machine as an administrator account
2. Launch Registry Editor (Type ' regedit' into the search/run field).  Ensure you bypass User Account Control settings on Windows Vista, 7, and 8 by using Right Click > Run As Administrator.
3. Locate the key 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData\S-1-5-18\Components'
4. Right Click on the key and go to 'Permissions'
5. Choose 'Advanced'
6. Go to the 'Owner' Tab
7. Choose 'Other users or groups'
8. Type in 'administrators' and click 'Check Names' to complete the entry for the Administrators group on the machine and choose OK.
9. Check the box for 'Replace owner on subcontainers and objects'
10. Make sure the 'Administrators' group is selected and choose OK.  You may get a message stating that not all keys could be modified, choose OK on that message.
11. Repeat steps 5 through 10 to ensure all Owner permissions have been applied correctly
12. Choose 'Advanced'
13. Go to the 'Permissions' Tab
14. Ensure the administrators group has Full Control over the key and check the box for 'Replace all child object permissions with inheritable permissions from this object'
15. Choose OK.  You may get a message stating that not all keys could be modified.  Choose OK on that message.
16. Repeat steps 12 through 15 to ensure all group Permissions have been applied correctly.
17. You should now be able to install Kurzweil 3000 without the Error 1402.
